Lost connectivity to the device mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0, df "can't open volume"

A while ago I got the error "Lost connectivity to the device mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0" on a Cisco c240 M4 server. ESXi is installed on an SD card (I believe it is anyway) . We are running ESXi 6.5 with vSAN. I remember a while ago I typed in some commands and saw the SD card sgowed up red and had "0" space on it. I just can't remember what I typed in. Anyway, today I was trying various commands:

df ---> cannot open volume

esxcli storage filesystem list ---> cannot open volume

1st- how do I nail down it's the SD card?

2nd- If I were to power off this server I would lose ESXi I gather, so I would need to most likely back up the esxi config and the VDS config? What about vSAN?

Been going in circles today.

I am replying to this, cause there is now discussion on reddit reddit.com/r/vmware/comments/m5a3kb/esxi_host_message_lost_connectivity_to_the_device/ with this symptoms.
