I was kinda hoping that the Update 1 to ESXi 5 would resolve this issue: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/326562
But I guess not. I'm not the only person with this, and I know that at least one other person tried to report it through the VMWare support channels, only to be told, "Sorry, some other part of your server isn't on the HCL", which I interpret to mean, "We don't really care if something that *is* on the HCL isn't working, because we can't be bothered to look why".
I'm sorry, that isn't the kind of support I expect from a company like this.
