LAG/LACP Uplink Setup

I recently got a good deal on a 4 port HP NC365T to use as a LAG in my 5.5 home lab. I am finally getting around to setting it up, but have a question I can't wrap my head around.

The only way I can get the vmkernel adapter to acquire a DHCP lease (e.g. getting the LAG to work) is to dedicate one of the physical NIC ports to an uplink that isn't apart of the 4 port LAG I was hoping to use.

This setup works, but I was expecting in my testing to just have the LAG0-4 uplinks and all the other ones removed:

How will having a 3 port LAG with one physical port setup outside the LAG as a separate uplink affect load balancing/throughput? Would I be better served having a 2 port LAG with a 2 port uplink?

All together LAG is combining the capacity together to provide the better throughput. If you remove the up-link from  LAG than how would it balance the Load in the LAG.
