Is this possible?

We will be setting up a virtual environment using VMware essentials 5.

My question is: In the event of a power outage and the server goes on to battery backup. Is there any way for ESX to recieve notification and properly shut down the guest operating systems before the batteries are depleted?

Yes it can but is going to depend on your UPS as a number of UPS manufacturers have agents that work with ESXi

Thanks for the info.

I went on APCs site and found what I need. They offer a free download called Powerchute, it works with their network management card.
