Is there an ESXi shutdown sequence error?

I read that the start-up sequence is 'Automatic Startup' VMs by configured start order and then VMs started in 'Any Order'.

The shutdown order is meant to be reverse of the start-up order.

But when I issue the 'reboot' or 'shutdown' commands in the vSphere Client. I get the reverse shutdown of the ordered VMs then shutdown of the remaining VMs.

I believe that it should be Suspend or shutdown the manually started VMs. Then the 'Any Order' VMs and finally the reverse of the 'Automatic Startup' VMs.

Am I missing something?

By default ESXi will wait 120 seconds for each virtual machine shutdown and there is no order about shutdown.

about startup:

  • Automatic: This category allows you to choose the sequence, by moving machines into this category, then arranging them in order.
  • Any order: In this category, the machines are started in whatever sequence the host prefers (more or less randomized).
  • Manual: In this category, the default, the machines are not automatically restarted. You must power them on manually.
