FWIIW: I have 4 VM's with private IP's on subnet  1. I have another VM needs public IP, subnet 2. I wanted full isolation so I added a PCI network card (hardware) and set it for passthrough. Works OK, NIC has second port if I need it in future. Had to make sure the brand/model of PCI NIC was compatible with ESXi. Note that I can't snapshot the VM with the PCI card, I have to power it of to use backup software.
