Intel Quad Core VS Core2 DUO for ESXi in workstation

Hi, guys!

I have some problem. I have to upgrade my home PC's CPU for working with vSphere installed in Workstation (i want to use ESXi in my workstation installed at home PC).

What whould be better to pay: core 2 duo CPU 3.0GHz/6MB/1333MHz or quad core CPU 2.50Ghz/6Mb/1333MHz or quad core CPU 2.66Ghz/4Мb/1333MHz?

Если тут есть русскоязычные, тогда смогу уточнить свой вопрос-проблему:

надо обновить свой проц, чтобы можно было установить ESXi в workstation на домашнем ПК. Проблема в выборе процессора. Что лучше: 2 ядра,больше частоты и кеша или 4 ядра с меньшей частотой и меньшим кешем?

IMHO, more cores are better. Bigger cache is better.

So I suggest: quad core CPU 2.50Ghz/6Mb/1333MHz

But add also a lot of RAM.

And consider to use ESXi (if possible) instead of Workstation.

also when you put in more VMs and etc, the bottle neck would be on the disks. make sure if possible SSD ..

ESXi is a better option if you dont plan on using the box for anything else. Keep in mind that if u install ESXi on it, u can only connect to the VMs running in this box from a different client via RDP etc... I would prefer ESXi over WS for performanc reasons.. being able to overcommit etc..

As mentioned above, 4 core = 4 vCPUs so u wont have scheduling issues.. Not sure what u plan to run here but appropriate memory would also be nice.. Lastly, if its just for home, more than likely u wont have a lot of load and disk would really be the bottle neck but I wouldn't worry much abt that if it just for lab and std home use.. Depending on what u plan to do with it, u may want to get faster disks... SSD maybe an overkill but again it all depends on what u will be running here.. good luck

I need to install only 1-2 VMs inside of ESXi. In my opinion core 2 duo CPU 3.0GHz/6MB/1333MHz should satisfy my requirements. doesn't it?

And even 2 ESXi can be istalled with 2 cores...RAM is not a problem

In a home lab, i think u should be fine..
