Installing Raid with ESXI 5.0

I'm working with ESXI 5.0 on my home machine without raid with 4 virtuals.  Right now they are sharing 1 hard drive.

1. Windows 2008 r2

2. Barracuda SPam

3. Barracuda Content

4. Windows xp pro

I would like to add three or four disk and buy raid controller to test speed, throughput etc.  My question is once I setup Raid am I able to slap the virtuals back in place or do I have to setup from scratch.  Do the virtuals know that they are running on Raid?

Welcome to the Community,

the virtual machines can be located on any supported storage (single disk, RAID, storage system, ...). The storage is completely transparent to the VMs. The guest OS can only see a  virtual disk and not the underlying hardware.

Regarding the RAID controller, make sure you get one which supports write-back operation (battery or flash backed write cache). This makes a HUGE performance difference.
