Install ESXi 5.5 over serial

I'm trying to get ESXi 5.5 install over serial working, and I've been following the instructions here: http://www.vmwareadmins.com/installing-esxi-serial-console-headless-video-card/

This works fine in 5.1, but in 5.5 when the install finishes I see the login prompt over serial, but it does not accept any keyboard entries. Does anyone know if the kernel parameters or anything else has changed for 5.5?

Not sure how that helps me. I'm trying to do a clean install over a serial interface.
