As your post needs moving to the area for ESXi, I have reported it to the volunteer moderators.

Am I right, that after upgrade of ESXi host you still see not current version?

Could you send a screenshot how it looks like?

Hi,

Let's see if I understand correctly, on your host GUI you see "image profile" like "(Updated) ESXi-7.0U3c-19193900-standard (VMware, Inc.)" even if you have updated to the latest available version, it has been discussed on several other occasions here and elsewhere. Basically it depends on how you applied the updates, AFAIK the indication is not functionally relevant, as far as I'm concerned, after years I don't even notice it anymore.

Take a look at this thread:
https://communities.vmware.com/t5/vSphere-Upgrade-Install/ESX-ESXi-Version-and-Image-Profile-do-not-...

Please find the Images for your reference,

If you a look at the Putty image and vCenter snapshot for the same host it's the updated version shows as expected, However, when I access the eSXi Host separately on other window, the under the CONFIGURATION - Image Profile, the version shows as the previous one, not the updated one as it suppose to be, How can I replicate the updated version in the Image profile as well as shown in the Putty out put and vCenter eSXi summary? This is all the same host in different windows that's it. I attached the screen shot for your reference to make it clear my doubt to get the answer precisely.

Host accessed via putty and it's out put

[root@apac176:~] vmware -vl
VMware ESXi 7.0.3 build-20842708
VMware ESXi 7.0 Update 3

Host access via vCenter and the snapshot given below,

deepu_p2006_0-1672375839110.png

Look at the direct access using GUI, shows Image profile not seen to be updated one that really updated as per previous images on the same eSXi,

Hi @deepu_p2006,

I report what is written by @a_p in the thread that I have indicated:

"Image Profile: (Updated) ... displays the image profile used when you first installed ESXi on the host , i.e. not necessarily the current version/build".

I would also add "or if the update is done off-line via ISO", but apart from that, what you have observed is such a long-standing behavior which by now I (and I assume many others)ended up not even paying attention to it anymore. Is it a clear inconsistency between two GUIs both tools used to manage the same host? Sure, I agree with you.

Ferdinando

Hi @Bilal041987,

May I ask who is the question addressed to?
In my case when updating via the standard "predefined baseline" the image profile displayed on the ESXi host GUI it practically never updated, as far as I remember (I'm old and it's stuff I haven't used for years now), since ESXi 6.0 onwards.

Ferdinando

Hi @Kinnison,

I am answering to @deepu_p2006  query.

When you update esxi patch using below command, usually it will update ESXi build but keeps previous image profile name. Just add prefix "(Updated)".

esxcli software vib update -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/VMware-ESXi-7.0U3i-20842708-depot.zip

If you want that image profile will also be same as the build are trying to update. You should use below commands and update esxi image profile which will also update the build as well.

Steps to update ESXi using Image Profile:

1. Put the host in maintenance mode
2. Use SSH and Shell to access ESXi and Login as root
3. Run the command to navigate to your datastore
cd /vmfs/volumes/<Your-Datastore-Name>/
4. Create a folder using any name like I am created a folder and name it "Offline-Bundle"
mkdir Offline-Bundle
5. Navigate to the folder that you created in step 4.
cd Offline-Bundle/
6. Use any tool like "WinSCP" and SCP to ESXi host and upload the Offline Bundle that you will use to update ESXi host.
7. Once uploaded, type below command and check the file is appeared to the folder.
ls
8. Use below command to list the Image Profiles in offline bundle.
esxcli software sources profile list -d "/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/Offline-Bundle/VMware-ESXi-7.0U3i-20842708-depot.zip"

Name Vendor Acceptance Level Creation Time Modification Time

9. Use below command to update Image Profile. Note: It will update the everything in given image profile.

esxcli software profile update -p ESXi-7.0U3i-20842708-standard -d "/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/Offline-Bundle/VMware-ESXi-7.0U3i-20842708-depot.zip"

That's it. you can view the attached screenshot named as "1.jpg" showing ESXi UI displaying the image profile that we use during update.

Also attached a file named as "Performed ESXI Update using Image Profile.txt" contains output of the session that I used to update ESXi using Image Profile method.

Hi,

What I meant is that the indication relating to the "image profile" is certainly correct at the time of installation but what it tells us, after various updates applied over time, is by no means said to correspond to the actual installed, this is why I say that since it may became of little or no use, it can be safely ignored. Very practical example, I deployed a ESXi with the ISO version 7.0U3g (the one available) then updated via LifeCycle manager using "cluster image" and this is the result from the host GUI: "(Updated) VMware Lifecycle Manager Generated Image (VMware, Inc.)".

That said you are absolutely right, if I manually update a host via CLI using the "profile" it updates that what the OP cares about, a choice that may have its own reason.

Regards,
Ferdinando
