IBM 3850 M2 RSA Adapter II Firmware Update on ESXi

We have a temperamental RSA II Adapater in IBM 3850 M2. Everytime I acces the web portal to update the firmware it locks up.

Is it possible to upgrade the the RSA II Adapter firmware from within Vmware ESXi?

The IBM website says the package support vmware but I'm not sure if this includes ESXi?

My only other option appears to be via bootable CD.

Update packages for VMware are typically Linux based which can run with the service console of ESX.  Those will not run on ESXi.
