Hypervisor Recovery - data?

I was going to revert back ab ESXi 5.1 version of the hypervisor by using SHIFT R

question:

will reverting back to a previous version cause me to lose the VMs

also, since this is on a dell r420, i was going to load the latest dell generated version..

during the install,

i select option - install esxi and preserve vmfs data,

will the vm's be retained?>

just wondering because there iss a message stating the drive will be re-partitioned...
