How windows recognizes CPU amount

Hi!

I know there are many subjects and questions concerning CPU assignment.  And even though i Think I understand I sometimes I don´t other times.

I usually try to assign a windows-hosts only 1 CPU but sometimes I need to assign Another for different reasons.  If i have one socket and assign 2 cores windows only see one CPU ( boot.ini don´t have the CPU option marked )   If I chose 2 sockets with 1 core windows see two CPU, why? Does it matter?

I thought the socket/core option was there for licensing reasons for example SQL servers.

Sorry for the perhaps stupid question.....

A single vCPU with two cores is the same as having two single core vCPU's ... the guest will see 2 cores in both instances, and yes the socket/core options will assist with products that are licensed per socket.

Thanks for your reply,

So that was what i thought from the beginning. The thing that was bothering me was that taskmanager and devicemanager had 2 cpu´s but properties for windows only had one. That kind of stuff drives me mad 😃

Cheers again
