I have the free version of VMware ESXi 5.0.0 installed, build 469512. When I try to download Update01, I get a message saying I'm not entitled to the update. This is a clean build, so I want to have it fully up to date before installing any VM's. How can I update the free version with the latest security and functionality patches without having to purchase anything?
You can download the update-from-esxi5.0-5.0_update01 patch from the Patch download link I posted above.
I'm not sure whether the Update 1 installation CD/ISO is available when you register for the free Hypervisor though (I didn't try this yet).

The easiest way is probably to install the vCLI and run the updates through the esxcli command. See http://communities.vmware.com/people/vmroyale/blog/2011/09/15/updating-esxi-5--single-use-esxcli-how... for a description.
You can download the update packsges from Download Patches. Keep in mind that some patches are cumulative and some are not (see release notes) Usually the "UpdateXX" patches are cumulative, so you can apply the Update01 patch without first applying other update. The updates following Update01 however should all be applied in the correct order.

Thanks for the help and the quick reply Andre,
When I try to download ESXi 5.0 Update 1, I get the message "You are not entitled to download this product. VMware ESXi 5.0 Installable Update 1".
Do I have to register for the update to ESXi 5.0 free version or something? I see no way to do that at the downloads page. I am logged in on the site.
Thanks,
Ted

Thanks for all your help Andre!

This would suggest you were trying to download a fresh installer, rather than just the patch.
It's simpler than that Josn26. I was not clicking the dropdown to select ESXi patches. :smileyblush:
I understand this is an older thread, but my question applies to this topic.
At the find patch portal, I see the update-from-esxi5.0-5.0_update02 there. I have no problems using vCLI to push this update out, as I used vCLI to push out updates to stand alone 4.0 and 4.1 ESXi servers before.
My question is update02 has a build number of 914586. So does that mean I do not have to download the patches below it, such as ESXi500-201206001 build number 721882?
So does Update02 (update-from-esxi5.0-5.0_update02 ESXi500-Update02 KB 2033751 and ESXi500-201212201-UG KB 2033753 ) include everything below it?
update-from-esxi5.0-5.0_update01 ESXi500-201203201-UG KB 2010814 03/15/2012
ESXi500-201205401-SG KB 2019858 05/30/2012
ESXi500-201206401-SG KB 2021030 06/14/2012
I browsed through KB 2033751 and KB 2033753 and did not see references for prior security updates 2021030 and 2019858 that came out after Update01. I know Update02 should include everything that Update01 has, but what about stuff relesed between those patches?
Like the name of the patch "update-from-esxi5.0-5.0_update02" says, this is a complete/cumulative patch packet and contains all patches since the 5.0 GA release.
André.
Thanks. This is good news as it will save me a lot of time, less to download and less reboots of the ESXi host.
