How to transfer file between ESXi4 Datastore and Guest OS (2003)

Hi

Can any one please tell or guide me towards transfering files from ESXi4 Guest (Server 2003 in my case) to ESXi4 Datastore and also to the vSphere PC(not from vSphere PC). I found out that the ESXi4 Guest does not detect USB pen or External Drives.

Can any one tell me a simple way of doing this

Thank you

Install Veeam FastSCP (it's free) in Windows VM.

or can use vSphere Client datastore browser, upload/download files as required (and map a drive to Win2k3 server from management PC). Can also install the client on the guest if required.

Thank you for your quick response, Vsphere Client datastore only allows transfer from and to vSphere. I want to transfer from Server 2003 which is running on ESXi 4 to Esxi Datastore and to vSphere Client. What do you mean by this (and map a drive to Win2k3 server from management PC). Can also install the client (Which client) on the guest if required.

Thank you

from vSphere client you can upload/download to any location accessible on that machine. So map a drive to the 2k3 server from that machine.

Unless you want to manage ESXi from that machine, don't install it. Yes, it can upload/download files, but it work very slow. VMware agreed that it is an issue caused by bad code and going to fix it in future releases.

What I've done in my lab is to use the R2 feature in Windows 2003 to setup a nfs share and mount it in the ESX/i host as a datastore. I use this method for guest os iso access directly through the host as well as copying/moving files around. The instructions can be found here: http://vmetc.com/2008/02/19/create-a-nfs-share-for-vm-iso-files-with-windows-2003-server-r2/
