How to stop stucked task

Dear team,

I have started "revert snapshoit task on one of the VM. From Last 5 hour it's stucked on 99% . delta disk size is 1GB. seems to be this process is hunged. Just want to confirm if i want to stop this task withou impacting other VM then what i have to do??

Need ur ugent asisstance on the same.

Check this KB for monitoring snapshot deletion.

VMware KB:    Commands to monitor snapshot deletion in ESX 2.5/3.x/4.x and ESXi 3.x/4.x/5.x 

Do not stop the task if it is still running in the background.

This is also depends on the activity on the VM, if there is a lot of IO activity consolidation will take longer; generally you don't want to cancel consolidation of snapshot if it is not causing performance issues.  Let it finish.

That's indeed unusual. Reverting to a snapshot should be a matter of seconds only. What's the current state of the VM, and what was the state of the VM for the snapshot you are reverting to? Does the VM's vmware.log file contain any recent entries? Does the vmkernel log show any errors?

Hi,

as others says don't try to kill the task ... instead using ESXTOP try to check snapshot deletion activity using method from KB below:

Monitoring throughput for only the snapshot consolidation process

VMware KB: Estimating the time required to consolidate snapshots for VMware ESX and VMware ESXi

If there is no activity check for existence of redo logs in VM folder on datastore and also in Snapshot Manager...

If there is existing entries and this is only one chain snapshot you can forcibly shutdown your VM and then manually delete all associated delta files (xyz-0001.vmdk)  NOT! base disk (xyz.vmdk).

Then you have to reconfigure your VM to point to base disk (xyz.vmdk) instead of snapshot...

If you cannot find any existing snapshots you may try to restart management agents on the host either from DCUI or via SSH session see:

thanks for valuable suggestion , finally task completed successfully.

Just for my knowledge if one of the process stucked /hang then how to stop that process safely without impacting other VMs / ESXi. need ur assistance on the same.

unless in extreme cases you can kill the VM process via:

# esxcli vm process kill –w world_id

or

# vim-cmd vmsvc/power.off vmid

or some process id

# kill <pid>

with these commands your only impact is on target world/process... (if you dont target system services 😉

Restarting host management agents have no impact on running VMs it is just short-time impact to host manageability until all agents starts up.
