How to rename the folder a template is in ...

This is a weird one. At some point, I created a template (I have a separate datastore I use just for templates). The template itself works fine, I can deploy from it, etc. But, for some reason, the folder on the datastore template has the wrong name.

All my other templates live in a folder that is the same name as the template itself (ex: "PHA Win 2012 R2 x64 Template -V2"). But this one template is in a folder not following that naming convention (i.e., the folder says "MAN021", instead of the name of the template).

How do you rename the folder, but not break the template? I still need to use the template, but I want the folder on datastore to follow the naming convention.

Is this possible? Or do I need to clone the template, specifying a slightly different name? Then go back and delete the current template?

To rename the template files/folder names on datastore, convert your template to a virtual machine, migrate (using Storage vMotion) that virtual machine to a datastore different than the current, that the files/folder will be renamed according with the name of your virtual machine. And so, migrate your virtual machine back to the datastore where your templates are stored, and than convert your virtual machine back to a template.

For another way to rename the VM files/folder, see: Renaming a virtual machine and its files in VMware ESXi and ESX (1029513) | VMware KB

Hi,

You need to convert the template back to a VM, Rename it and vMotion it. The vMotion wizard will ask you if you want to keep the files in the same Datastore. Choose to migrate to other datastore, it will sync up the names on the Datastore with the new name in the vCenter interface.

Later on you can move the VM back to template datastore the way you need and convert the VM back to template.

Thanks n Regards
