How to recover the windows VM.

i have a VM running windows that refuse to restart, complaining that the parent disk is inconsistent with the one of the child disks.

this happend after i did a windows update running on the VM.

i would like to recover the data in teh machine even if i dont restrt it.

i tried using \"vmware-mount", but the tool refuses to mount the harddrive because the machine was in suspended state.

Any suggestions/BKM are highly appreciated.

thanks,

kamal.

Do you use snapshots? Read this - maybe it will help - Verifying the integrity of hosted virtual machine parent disks and Verifying the integrity of the parent disks for an ESX virtual machine

Hi

open the .vmx file in the datastore, you will see where is pointing the drives: it will tell you the active disk (same as if you go to edit settings), open that file and get the parent ID and try to find the main disk, and replace that id.

First, select your virtual machine and right click Remove from Inventory

Second, add new virtual disk by select Use Existing Virtual Disk which remove previously on another virtual machine

Third, you should be able to see new hard disk available on your virtual machine. Backup your data now!
