How to diagnose hung guest OS

I have a guest OS which is hung, even VMware tools shows installed but not running.

Even the console doesn't respond to C-A-Delete.

I checked the esxtop, which looked fine in ds/storage, cpuready, io, network, et.c.

There is only one VM in the server.

When I reboot it, its' fine, but it hangs within a day or two.

Suggestions anyone?

I would like to have a bit more information

What kind of guest OS are you using?

Did you check eventlog etc. from your guest OS, might be a clue there why this VM stops

Could you relate the time of the hang to other related events in your environment?

Is the VM still reachable by network or is it totally off the radar ?

With some more information, it's easier to give you a clue where to look Smiley Happy

The system itself is a Windows 2008 R2 SP2.

Checking the event log this morning, the machine is suspisciously quiet. There are very few events in the event log, but it does mention some regular tasks -- database backups are happening overnight. This morning it was hung.

It was unable to be pinged over the network, and the console was unresponsive.

We're a third party but the customer responds that nothing is happening at that time.

Suspend the hung VM and use https://labs.vmware.com/flings/vmss2core to generate a Windows memory.dmp file from the suspended image.  Then you can use WinDbg to figure out what's happening.

since you are not able to ping the VM, check if you have any SAM error on the event viewer, also check the netlong service on the server,

What application the server is hosting ?

is CPU and Memory sufficient for thee VM?

after reboot check the VM logs, and network settings.
