How to check if hardware support Extended Page Table feature in VMware ESX 4 Update 1

Dear Sir,

How do I know if my hardware supports Extended Page Table (EPT) or not in VMware ESX 4 update1?

Scenario:

I installed VMware ESX4.0 U1 on a server but I don't know if the server (hardware) can support the EPT or not.

Is there any way to check if the hardware can support the EPT or not in VMwaer ESX4.0 U1 (with vSphere client or some tools)?

Thanks and regards,

Tree Chang

Have you tried the CPU ID utility? http://www.vmware.com/download/shared_utilities.html

Dear Cody,

I downloaded the utility and check the readme.

There is no information for EPT in readme.

Will there be an entry for the EPT?

Do you how to interpret the output for EPT is supported or not?

Thanks and regards,

Hi Cody,

I tried with VMware CPU ID utility.

There seems no information for EPT support.

Is there other way to check if my hardware can support EPT or not in VMware ESX?

Or could you please let me know to check if EPT is supported with VMware CPI ID utility?

Thanks and regards,

Tree Chang

EPT depends by the CPU type and (in some cases also by chipset and/or BIOS settings).

You can try to use a VM, for MMU hardware acceleration and see (from logs) if works:
