Is there a way to allign ESXi VMs data (non C) disks that already have data on them without wiping them? Some kind of "live allign"

If you have a NetAPP filer you can use their tool: mbralign.

Check if your storage vendor offers a best practice document regarding alignment (at least EMC and NetAPP does).

Read this document, it contains some instructions on how to achieve alignment for Windows and Linux guests: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_partition_align.pdf

Microsoft offers several document and some tools. Go to their site and search for "align partition".

Utilities like Partition Magic might be worth a look. A shame the vmware converter doesn't do it really although IIRC PlateSpin PowerConvert does.

Please award points to any useful answer.

I'm afraid vOptimizer doesn't work with ESXi:

http://vizioncore.com/products/vOptimizerPro/documents/vOptimizerPro_SystemRequirementsGuide.pdf

The following versions of ESX Server are not supported:

• VMware ESXi Server (any version)

• VMware ESX Server 2.5.4

• VMware ESX Server 2.5.3

• VMware ESX Server 2.5.2
