esxcli command cant be used directly on the esxi shell.
as updated in my perivous post download the vcli tool and install on your desktop or some windows server, were esxi is reachable.
and run the command you will succeed..
Hi,
You can either use Update Manager or follow this guideline: http://communities.vmware.com/people/vmroyale/blog/2011/09/15/updating-esxi-5--single-use-esxcli-how... if you have a stand-alone host.
With ESXi free version we cant use update manager so follow the below steps to update the patch on the host.
Download vcli from the below link
http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vcli/
Install the vcli on the desktop from where your able to reach ESXi
Download the esxi5 patch and upload to datastore where esxi is able to reach it
example:-
/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/XYZ00x.zip
Place the host in the mainteance mode
Now use the command from where you installed vcli.
esxcli --server=10.10.10.10 --username=root software sources vib ɡеt -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/XYZ00x.zip
once its completed reboot the server and your all well to go..

Hi Spravtek,
I have tried two three steps & after that i am getting bellow error
Unknown command or namespace server=10.10.25.210 username=root software source vib list depot=/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi500-201111001.zip
Unknown command or namespace server=10.10.25.210 username=root software vib update depot=/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi500-201111001.zip
What's the exact command you're using?
Are you using the vMA?
Hi,
I am using Putty to connect to my ESXi Server & there i ran these commands
~ # esxcli software vib update --depot=/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi500-201111001.zip
Error: Unknown command or namespace software vib update depot=/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi500-201111001.zip

Hi Dharshan,
I have installed an updated patch, so wanted to check if that patch is properly installed or not. can you provide me that perticular command.
Installed patch is: ESXi500-20111100
Hi,
I have updated the patch with this command--esxcli software vib update --depot=/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi500-201111001.zip from esxcli. Now I am facing a different issues, I have rebooted the server after successful update but after that I am not able to login to my ESXi, my existing IP is not pinging at all. is it due to this patch update? Because DHCP is disabled & this ESXI server is on a different subnet.
Is the server is configured with DHCP IP. Then that might be the cause.
Take directe console access and login with root account. see if DHCP is enabled or not. Recommended to use a static IP.
DHCP is disabled.only Static IP is configured.
Did you try login to direct console of the esxi and check the status of the nics..
Yes.
OK. that issue got resolved. Now it is taking.
Thats cool..
