How to Monitor disk failure on Adaptec card 5405 with ESXi?

Hi Guys,

We are going to setup VMWare ESXi server on an Intel box probably SR1600 UR

We aim to put 3 X 1 TB disks with 12 GB Ram and a Xeon processor.

We want to use RAID 5 with ADAPTEC 5405 card.

Questions:

1) How do we Monitor disk failure on Adaptec card 5405 on VMWareESX1 server?

2) Has anybody faced any problem with 3 X 1TB disks?

Your advice will be appreciated.

cheers,

Kumar

I do know that one can install the ASM ( Adaptec storage Monitor) on the ESX/ESXI Server, then remotely monitor from a workstation, not a vmguest. as to what ASM to use? check on Adaptec site for info, also look in the A.S.K knowledgebase for Limitation on Vmware.

Hope this helps.

Cheers for the reply but a couple of questions. Its only ESXi i'm using so i'm wondering if your talking about using ASM by taking the command line version and copying it (and associated libraries) to the ESXI server but that would mean using the unsupported console access. Is that what you mean?

Nope , not using the command line version, the actual install for Linux or VMware not sure what one to use the 32bit or the 64 bit. I'm waiting on a answer for that on another post. I've never tried it yet but i've read other have. please read the link bellow

*_Installation and use of Adaptec Storage Manager (ASM) on VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 and 3.5:_<<br />•Mount the Adaptec Storage Manager installation CD:

mount -r /dev/cdrom /mnt/linux/

•Change to the manager directory on the CD-ROM:

cd /mnt/cdrom/linux/manager

•Type the following command to install the 32-bit Linux Adaptec Storage Manager on the VMware ESX Server:

rpm --install ./StorMan*.rpm

•Type the following command to open the range of ports required by Adaptec Storage Manager to connect remotely:

esxcfg-firewall -o 34571:34581,tcp,in,"StorMan"

•Install Adaptec Storage Manager on a Windows or Linux machine.

•From the Windows or Linux client, connect to the Adaptec Storage Manager Agent on the VMware ESX Server using the ASM GUI.

Note: The Adaptec Storage Manager Agent on the VMware ESX Server cannot be monitored from a guest operating system .

*_but can be monitored from a client workstation.... make sure ports are open.._ *

If you look at the link given you'll see that it does not apply to ESXi. ESXi uses CIM Providers to obtain hardware health status and at this point Adaptec hasn't provided one. ESXi doesn't have the Linux service console that ESX has so you are not able to install rpm packages.

Thanks for Clearing that up Dave, What would be an appropriate way to monitor these adaptec cards? besides shutting down and checking via the bios, or when you arrive home and the server isn't running at all becaus the striped config you made is dead! Isn't there a way to check via log files?

Thanks

Thanks,

Thats the same conclusion i came to. As there is no CIM the answer is to not use ESXi and use ESX.

Thanks for the replies.
