How does the web client find vCenter/SSO

In vSphere 5.1, when I type https://myhost.mycompany.com:9443/vsphere-client/ in my browser, I immediately get an login screen. When I enter my credentials, all work great. I am assuming in this example, the web client backend is listening to port 9443.

- Does the web client backend expect SSO to always be running on the same host as itself. I mean, is it possible to have a scenario where the web client backend is running on a different host than vCenter or SSO.

- If at the time of installation, we configured SSO to listen to a port other than the default one, do I have to configure the web-client backend as well, or does it also get reconfigured.

Thanks.

Yes, you can install SSO separately from other vCenter components: See http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/topic/com.vmware.vsphere.install.doc/GUID-595E62F1-4D32-4A09-81F4-...

When doing separate installations you need to install SSO first. When you later install the Web Client service you need to point it to the SSO service by providing the SSO service URL. SSO listens on https port 7444 by default. If you have configured it differently (I don't know if this can be done) then you just need to change the port number in the SSO URL.

The Web Client service itself listens on port 9443 by default. See http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/topic/com.vmware.vsphere.install.doc/GUID-74AA3EF1-BDF3-4752-89DB-...
