How does a ESXi 5.1 host determine the APD (all paths down) state to a NFS datastore ?

I am troubleshooting 2 different issues, both involve APD warnings. The first issues is APD warnings on all hosts within vCenter at the start and end time of a Netapp VMWare (Snapdrive) backup policy. And second I also see random APD messages on random hosts but always APD to the same datastores.

For further investigation I am really interested to know how APD is determined, when I understand the process behind it I will be able to troubleshoot this more accurate.

It will also be easier to provide information to the storage- and network admins to check things on their part.

Thanks Mustafa, I already read the article in the the first link. Although it provides a lot of useful information, it is all based upon iSCSI and Fibre and there is very little info regarding how this works on NFS storage.
