How do you monitor your hardware when running ESXi 4.0?

Let me first apologize if this is the wrong forum to ask this question. I figure this the closest forum to ask for help.

I finally have ESXi 4.0 installed and running a couple of VMs. Then it hit me. How do I monitor my hardware? Currently, I use Nagios and NRPE agent for hardware checks. How can I do that on Xenserver? Is it possible? I really want to know when a disk fail in my array or what the load avg is.

How do you everyone else monitor their hardware?

Hello,

Moved to the ESXi 4 forum.

ESX and ESXi contain the Pegasus CIM server and that is the best way to monitor your hardware.

NRPE will not work as there is nothing into which you can install the nagios tools on ESXi.

You have multiple options to monitot hardware in ESX 4.0

1.Enable Hardware Status tab Plug-in in vCenter Server. You will get a additional tab where you will almost all the hardware related information.

2.Go to VI host client (Vi client directly connected to ESx server)>Configuartion>Health Status(first option), you will get a subset of information available in Hardware status tab.

3.You will get vCenter alarms for hardware failures in ESX server.

4.You can configure SNMP for ESX (search for more details).

If your server doesn't support IPMI you may not get all the detailed information, almost all the latest servers IPMI.

What is STILL weak is vCenter alarm forwarding to say an enterprise framework, for example Tivoli TEC/TBSM. Even using Dell or HP CIM provider add-ons for ESXi 4 have gaps. Have not evaluated IBM yet, but so far Dell on ESXi is the clear winner. But Dell DMC and HP SIM only forward SNMP traps to Tivoli TEC as only vCentre can do.
