Hi,
I want to run esxi on a stand alone Dell PowerEdge server with a 4 disk RAID 5 array. I'm curious what would happen if one of the disks in the RAID were to die. How would I know to replace it besides looking in the BIOS? The guest OS would have no idea it's running on top of a RAID, so the windows tools aren't going to work.
Thanks,
John
ESXi is able to obtain hardware information through CIM providers. If you have an LSI based controller, you can go to Configuration > Health Status (look for the Health tab if you're using vCenter). If the CIM providers support the controller you should see the status of the controller, arrays and disks.

Do you have a system or PCI card working with VMDirectPath? Submit your specs to the Unofficial VMDirectPath HCL.

As said, the hardware needs to be listed in vSphere client under health status.
