How do VmWare handle different cpu types?

HI

I would like to know the difference between using a 6-core cpu instead of

a 4-core cpu in my VMware environment. We are running ESXi 4.1.0u2

on Cisco blade server 200m2, what are the Disadvantages / advantages?

The two processors I want to compare is the 4-core Intel 2.66-GHz

Xeon E5640 against the 6-core Intel 2.67-GHz Xeon X5650.

I want to run a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 32bit, on the 6-core cpu, but

Cisco validated design says it has to be a 4-core cpu.

Well, basically the 6 core CPU can handle more simultaneous teaks than the 4 core CPU. For the individual VM's this may not make a big difference, because ESXi schedules a single core for each vCPU that's configured in the VM's settings. So if you assign 4 vCPUs to a VM, ESXi will schedule 4 cores, no matter whether the physical CPU has 4, 6 or 10 cores.
