Hi,
We just bought a child company and they are running 2 VMs on an ESXi server. We bought a new physical server and installed ESXi (latest version) and would like to transfer the 2 VMs to the new ESXi sesrver.
What is the best method to do this?
Thank You
Sarge
It depends on how the virtual disks are provisioned. With thick provisioned virtual disks you could just copy the VMs (powered off) using e.g. FastSCP. However, I'd personally prefer to backup the VMs using an image based backup application and restore them on the new hosts. This will not only be a save way to do the job, but also allows you to keep a backup of the VM's current state. Unless you have a backup application, take a look at e.g. VeeamZIP (for licensed ESXi editions) or Trilead's VM Explorer (in case you are running the free ESXi Hypervisor).

Install the trial version of the vsphere appliance on your new esxi host, add the hosts to a cluster and vmotion them to the new host.

you can also use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and move the VM's
simple way to backup the file and use on other esxi or before clustaring first you check the hardware campatability
I would use converter standalone to address any issues that may occur across platforms.
