Hello,
I know hot VM cloning is supported but is it still better to cold clone a VM? I want to clone a production Windows VM. Is there a risk to the original VM while hot cloning?
Thanks, Morrisos
Theres no real risk to the live VM during the cloning unless the cloning process beats up your storage enough to make it perform poorly.
Cold clone is still better - its a more consistent image.
Thanks. I think I will cold clone just to get most consistent image. Good to know hot is safe too.
Take a look at Best practices for using and troubleshooting VMware Converter and Troubleshooting checklist for VMware Converter. According to the articles, the "cold clone" method is used only when "hot clone" for some reason is not possible
