Think of a large cluster with lots of hosts. Host Profiles are a feature to verify the hosts are configured identically (based on the profile). It can not only be used to verify the hosts are compliant, it can also be used to configure the hosts.

Basically, you have 2 reasons for using it.

1) You can create a 'rpfile' (like a template) of how an ESX host in your cluster should look. when you then build new hosts into your cluster, you can erffectively drop the 'profile' onto a new host and as long as you have patched it / networked it identically, have a new ESX hosts in your cluster in no time

2) If you have a cluster and prefer manual configuration, you can still create a 'profile' of a host in you cluster, then use Host profiles to compare all the hosts in your cluster to ensure consistency of configuration.

Good luck
