Host hard shut down iscsi vmnic issue

Did some searching and I am unable to find an answer as to why this happened.  We experienced a power outage that brought the host down (a perfect storm of events occurred that allowed for this to happen), and when the host came back up the shared storage was not accessible.  We're using iscsi software adapter for this particular host. ISCSI is set up to Vmware best practices. Troubleshooting ruled out the physical switch and SAN. Bounced the ports on the switch but the vmnics in esxi showed "down". The only thing that fixed it was logging in via ssh and running  "esxcli network nic up –n vmnicX" and bringing the nics back online manually.  Once that was done the storage became accessible again and all was well.

I am trying to determine root cause... how do we prevent this from happening in the future?  Why did it happen in the first place?  I'm thinking maybe it's a safety measure of some sort but again I am not able to find any information on it to confirm. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be helpful. Thanks.
