Host file keeps going back to original entry. cant update hostfile, HA issues

I installed vsphere4 with one host name and then wanted to change it....I updated the host file, /etc/network and even did a 'hostname newhostname' but when i go back to review the hosts file, it just goes back to the original hostname! HA doesnt add an entry to the host file which makes me believe it is not working. I restart the network service, the server and it still goes back to the host name the i put when i installed the server. strangely when i do the hostname command, I get the correct new hostname. but i can only ping the server using the original hostname because that is what is in the hosts file.

any one seen this before? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Change name in vSphere client. All corresponding files will be updated automatically.

You know, I didnt even think of that.....all the KBs and the 3.5 book talk mostly about the files on the server. That seem like a great thing to try....unfortunately.....I called vmware suppose and the guy messed around with a few more files on the servers for 2 hours and ended up crashing all 3 hosts in the cluster. he couldnt get them connected to vcenter again and advised that I reinstall the OS. I'll think twice before calling them again.

but thanks for your advice....I'll use it in the future.

for now, My resolution was to reinstall the OS

I would ask for a duty manager and let the duty manager know that the TSE working your issue caused an outage. If this is truly what happened this is not acceptable support from VMware.

This was a new cluster with only 2 prod vms on it. so I was able to reinstall one at a time...so it wasnt that bad....I was just more upset that I had to wait 2 hours before starting the install....as i am on a tight timeline. Its ok, I dont have a desire to get anyone in trouble especially in this economy. Just have to be more careful next time.
