[HomeLab] Mobo Asrock X79 Extreme6 for vSphere 5.1

Hi Everyone,

i am finally going to build a whitebox for my lab and a good choice seems to be the asrock x79 extreme6 but i can't seem to find anyone that can report problems/issues using this mobo to install vsphere 5.1.

My concearn is the onboard nic and the sata ports which are all sata3 and sometimes these things are just difficult to predict if they will work or not.

Also, i am thinking to put a Corsair 64GB Kit (Vengeance DDR3-1600) and an Intel i7-3820 or i7-3930k.

Can anyone help me understand if this is a good choice? Anyone know about issues?

Thank you.

Hi Caddo,

I am also thinking about the same mobo and RAM memory for my esxi 5.1 / hyper-v 3 home server !

Did you already buy the X79 Extreme 6 ? Is the SATA controller working ?

For the NIC you need an driver for what I've been reading right now..

Check this link : Devolfamily » Blog Archive » ESXi 5.1 whitebox

Hope to hear from you...

Thanks!

I have no idea.

I decided to go for an asus mobo that work great in my lab, just the integrated nic didn't work so i got another one because i didn't want to customize the esxi iso.
