Help with Init version 2.86 reloading error

Hello All,

I currently have 1 stand alone ESX 4.0 Build 164009 server that randomly will hang with the following error: Init version 2.86 reloading. The ESX server will still ping however the virtual machines on the host stop running. When I go to the console this error is the only thing on the screen and I am unable to break out of it. After resting the ESX host it seems fine, but I would like to find out what is causing this error. It seems like something is changing the init config or trying to but there is no update manager in the enviroment or anything that would patch the hosts. Any help would be greatly appricated !

I'm getting this same exact message on an ESX host (version 4 update 1). It's disconnected from vCenter and I can't ssh into it. I can ping it and all the VMs are still running. Is the only way to fix this a reboot? It is really going to be a problem if that is the only fix.

Anyone know a better fix for this?

I getting the same error "INIT: version 2.86 reloading" at the login screen. Using ESX4.1

I haven't loaded any VMs yet but worried that I may face the hang issue later on. Any expert comments?

Have you check that your systems are in HCL?

I am currently experiencing this problem on one of my ESX 4.1 Build 260247 hosts.  The host will reply to ping and the VMs are still running on it.  I cannot connect to it with ssh/http/vshpere at the moment.  Hooked up a monitor and keyboard to the host, hit Alt-F1 and was greeted by "INIT: version 2.86 reloading", and that's where it stopped.

Waiting until the end of the work day to shutdown the VM's and reset it.
