  • 1.  Have I copied my VMs correctly from datastore?

I downloaded two VMs from the datastore on my ESXi host using the vClient. I ended up with two separate folders on my local computer, but when I look inside the contents do not match the respective VM's files in the datastore.

I get a .vmdk file and a *-flat.vmdk file. I searched and if I'm correct the .vmdk is a sort of pointer to the *-flat.vmdk file.

Basically, my question is when I upload these folders back to my ESXi host will the two files merge and be recognised by the VMs?

    Thanks

    You need:

    *.vmdk

When you reupload them, they wont merge, but based on the contents of the primary.vmdk (the pointer file) ESX will know what to do with them.

these 2 files will remain there after you upload to the datastore, and you need both of them to present the virtual disk to your virtual machine. In VC, you will not able to see -flat.vmdk always and yes, you are correct on the .vmdk description you mentioned earlier.
