Hardware Compatiblity Guide for Workstations?

I have a client who needs a server operating system for an application. I don't think he needs an $1,800 server. A high quality workstation that supports ESXi will do fine.

Can someone tell me where the hardware compatibility guide is for workstations? I've checked the guide on the VMWare site here and it seems to list HP DL 360's, ML 350's, etc. etc., but I don't see a way to look up specific high end workstations.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi,

No vmware doesn't not provide a compatibilty guide for workstation. My guess, the only way in your case, is to buy a processor that support virtualisation technology and check each I/O devices (Network, PCI ,etc) in the compatibility guide.

A question, why you don't create a vm into vmware workstation for example? You will be sure of the compatibility.. And just for one virtual machine...

the VMware HCL will contain only the server model.. If you are planning to install ESXi on workstation then you check this ESX / ESXi 4.0 Whitebox HCL

Hi. Thanks for your reply.

My client needs one virtual at the moment but that could change. He might need another at some point. That's why I'm looking to an ESXI solution rather than a virtual on XP or 7. Good point.

Thanks much!
