Hard Disk Size

Hi,

If we want to increase Hard disk size for a VM. How do we do that? Can we do it while it is power on?

I have got the info from one website that:

While converting V2V, in the process customized settings, we can increase the Hard disk size.

I am not sure if the above is correct? If the above is correct, is there any alternate way.

Thanks,

Prashant

Hi,

If you have ESX 3.5 or newer:
  1. Open VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client and connect to VirtualCenter or the ESX host.

  2. Right-click the virtual machine.

  3. Click Edit Settings.

  4. Select Virtual Disk.

  5. Increase the size of the disk.

Note: If this option is greyed out then the disk may be running on snapshots or the disk may be at the maximum allowed size depending on the block size of the datastore

  6. Follow the steps in Increasing the size of a disk partition (1004071) so the guest operating system is aware of the change in disk sizeR

If we want to increase Hard disk size for a VM. How do we do that? Can we do it while it is power on?

yes.  NEVER increase the size of a HDD while the guest has an active snapshot.  The vSphere Client option will be greyed out, so that will help a bit.

While converting V2V, in the process customized settings, we can increase the Hard disk size.

yes, you can do it via converter, but it's quicker to do it post conversion.

Yes its possible to extend the disk on vSphere Client and extend on OS level.

Which OS are you running and which drive you want to extend?

By using VMware Converter it is possible to extend the disk/voulme by selecting the advanced option in the disk screen

I would use gparted ( http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ ) to grow the size of the partition ( after you have resized the virtual disk).
