HP Proliant hangs on boot for 30 minutes on HPVSA module

Hello everyone, we have a ProLiant ML350e Gen8 v2 and even from the installation boot and then on the disk boot it hangs literally 30 minutes after it says "loading module hpvsa..."

This server has a B120i onboard raid system

We tried several versions of hpvsa driver and various of VMWARE for HP iso's

VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-Update2-2403361-HP-550.9.2.30.9-Mar2015.iso

VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.3.20-Jun2015.iso

VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.3.30.2-Jun2015.iso

VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-Update1-3029758-HP-600.U1.9.3.5-Oct2015.iso

This is the last iso we used and keeps doing the 30 minutes delay.

VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-Update1-3073146-HP-600.9.4.34-Nov2015.iso

Even with this plain vmware without hp drivers. The thing about this is that it doesnt have hpvsa so the disk appear separated (without raid).

VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0-2494585.x86_64.iso

We asked HP for new mother board and it has the same fails.

Could someone give us a clue how to fix this?

Dear all THANKS A LOT for all replys. I think I've found the solution for this mess

Without any change on the raid as it was on the first time after installing the next iso the delay went down to 5-7 minutes on loading hpvsa.

The final times are:

From minute 0 to 2 aprox server loads HP Bios Post etc

From minute 2 to 9 esxi 5.1.0 (update 0) loads beware that hpvsa still hangs about 5-7 minutes

at minute 10 or 14 all virtual machines load fine.

Hi,

unfortunately the B120i controller isn't listed on the HCL für vSphere 6.0 U1. Can you disable the controller and check if the server still hangs?

Thanks for quick response. Where can I find that HCL that you mention? the HCL I've found had only servers not raid controllers.

I've tried to change on bios from raid to non raid and it didnt hanged but the disk wasnt been as a group.

thanks again

This HP sever is on HCL list. HP custom ESXi image contains driver for B120i.
Unfortunately latest hpvsa drivers performs extremely poorly under Linux VMs on Microserver Gen8.

I really dont care about last driver versions nor esxi versions.
I've tried so many olders drivers under esxi 6.0 and one iso of 5.5.0-Update2.
If some one have a combination of esxi and hpvsa driver that actually works fine I'm up to it.

Last but not least. Thank you for your quick response.

Hi,

visit the VMware Compatibility Guide website and choose "IO Devices". You can enter "B120" into the "Keyword" field. Nothing listed. Try another controller, e.g. P421 > You will see the support information.

Disabling the RAID mode leads to the noticed behaviour, that disks are detected independently. That's not what you want. Even if HP has added the drivers to their image: It's seems that the controller still isn't supported.

The server itself is listed on HCL list. And HP stated that B120i is compatible with ESXi 6.
B120i isn't separate hardware controller. It is software driven level on top of Intel chipset's functionality.

Have you configured the disks in the RAID controller at all? Seems to me as they are not configured in the RAID controller, and is found as single unconfigured disks.

Even if you want to run disks as single disks, it is good sense to define them each as Raid 0 and register them with theRAID controller as they are then defined

yes I DID but I've created two logical drives. one for os files and one for data files

like 2 datastores but behind raid.

I think both disks are 1tb

I don't know solution of problem, but I would check things step by step and try to localize the problem

1. Update BIOS, firmwares, ILO etc. Reset them all. Remove power completely from server for ~10 s (I know it is sounds weird, but I had problems after updates with booting/ILO on Microserver. Complete power-off resolved that.)
2. Install ESXi from scratch with latest HP image on internal SD card or USB. Without any disk attached. Check the booting time.
3. Attach one disk, check cables, make new RAID0 array from scratch on the whole disk. If problem appears, check with different manufacturer disk.
