HELP! cannot power on VM after tools update and virtual HW upgrade

Hey everyone.  I'm pulling my hair out.

I have a win 64 VM that was running fine, but i wanted to update the tool and move it to Virtual HW 8 from 7.  Everything seemed to go fine, but when i restart i get a competely unhelpful message "a general system error occurred: the virtual machine could not start"

any help would be appreciated.

actually now I'm finding that none of my machines can start up.  I'm rebooting the host to see if that clears it.

Reboot fixed it.  That was wierd.
