HA with just one phys. NIC?

Hi!

First, I'm pretty new with VMWare, 2. i hope that's the right place to ask.

I have a Testenvironment with one ESXi 6.5 Server on where i build a nested ESXi environment for clustertesting. Now I have the Problem, that this phys. Server has just 1 phys. NIC.

I like to know if it is possible to simulate a 2nd phys. NIC/"clone" the existing one. I just need it for testing and i don't have a 2nd phys. NIC.

Thanks,

Janine

It is not necessary to have more than one NIC to achieve HA. You can configure HA with the same NIC that is configured for VMkernel also. It is a best practice to use a separate NIC for HA and FT. For testing and lab scenario one physical NIC is enough.

But you require a vCenter server and shared storage or vSAN

Since you're using a nested ESXi host, you can add how many network adapter you want to the ESXi virtual machine, that is not limited by the number of physical adapter.

Hi,

Maybe I don't get it, but I try to explain my concrete scenario:

I have a vSwitch0;the Management Networt, the VM Network and 2 vMotion Portgroups. Also the one physical Uplink NIC with the vmnic0 Adapter.

Now I want to configurate Teamning and Failover for the two vMotion Portgroups. But with just 1 uplink I can't configure active and standby adapters reverse for each portgroup, whether there is just one NIC to choose, naturally...I don't know whether I have a base understanding-problem or not but how can I manage that?

thanks,

Janine
