HA with Essential package

HI,

I'm trying to implement HA with the cheapest configuration.

I have 2 ESXi servers and a SAN.

I tried the HA scripts for the FREE ESXi 4 version and got "Restricted Version Error".

Is it possible to have High Availability with the Essential package (NOT Essential Plus)?

is there any other cheap way to implement HA?

Thanks.

You would need to look at essentials plus or otherwise open up SSH and run the scripts that way.

Hi,

I've opened the SSH but still got the error of the restricted version, as far as I could understand the FREE version enable a READ ONLY state.

did you or someone esle succeed to use the HA scripts with the FREE ESXi 4 version?

If yes, can you please point me to the specific scripts?

Thanks.

Not true. But the console is very limited, so some scripts that work on ESX could not work on ESXi.

Which script are you using? Can you post the link?

Hi,

I'm using this:

The commands that gives the error are:

/usr/lib/vmware-viperl/apps/vmregister-simple.pl

and

/usr/lib/vmware-viperl/apps/powerops-simple.pl

VI Perl is installed.

I don't have VirtualCenter!

thanks.

Perl require a lot of modules thar probably you do not have on ESXi.

Try to use a shell based script, like this:

Hi,

Where can I find the FREE ESX (NOT ESXi) version for download?

I could only find vServer and ESXi for free.

thanks.

There is no free version of ESX, but you can download and evaluation copy of ESX and vCenter if you want to test the HA functionality.

Hi Andre,

I'm using script to do HA, this script register the machine on the second host and turn it ON.

my problem is that now the second host asking me, did you "copied it", "moved it" etc..., and prevent the VM from starting.

how can I automate this completely ?

do I need to choose for this solution "copied it" or "moved it" or something else?

Thanks.

Just say, the first time, "I moved" (always keep in ESX 3.5).

Look at Essentials Plus. It is a much better value proposition than Essentials IMO as it includes some support as well as HA etc.

Please award points to any useful answer.

Hi,

in HA, do I need to use the "I moved it" option or "I copied it" option?

thanks.

You must preserver your VM UUID... so use "I moved" (as I written before).
