Guest VM loses NIC settings

We are trying to reinstall VMTools. Once we reinstall VMTools it loses its NIC card settings.

VMware vsphere ESXi 5.1

Appreciate why it would lose and what should be done in order to prevent it not happening.

Which kind of NIC is used for the VMs and also let me know, which settings will be removed from the VMs?

Is your VM using DHCP? If it is so, then it might be quite logical: when you install new VMtools (including driver for NIC), network might be temporary disabled when driver is reloaded. VM then gets new network-settings from DHCP-server...

What is the NIC type assigned to impacted VM?
