  • 1.  Grow Disk Issue ona VM

    Posted Jun 16, 2011 07:32 PM

    Hi All,

    I have a VM with 2 virtual disks C; and D:

Disk C is on IDE controller - 15GB

Disk D is on SCSI controller - 20GB

I wanted to grow disk C to 30GB but for some reason when I go to Edit Settings -  Hard Disk 1 I cannot edit disk size as it is grayed out

There is space in Datastore and there are no snapshots. I powered down the VM

    Disk D is editable

Any other reasons why Disk C is not editable and greyed out?

    Thank you!

    Kosta

    Hello.

You cannot expand an IDE disk.  Use VMware Converter as a workaround.

    Good Luck!

    Welcome.

You cannot increase the IDE drive. You need change IDE to SCSI. Check this procedure to change controller IDE to SCSI http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1016192

After do it you can grown your disk with extpart of Dell.

    Good Luck

For whatever reason growing an IDE disk from the GUI is not possible. You can either convert the VM to have only SCSI disks or grow the IDE disk using vmkfstools -X on the console or through SSH. see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1007266

Also make sure the disk does not have any snapshots (i.e. the disk name is like <vmname>-00000x.vmdk)
