Giving DBA's Read Access to VShere Client for Performance Diagnositic

We are in the process of migrating all of our MS SQL server databases from physical to VM. I have ask my VM admins if we could have read access to the monitoring tools (vsphere client..), They are telling me no because the information that is returned from these tools can display a fail positive. I just want to make sure that this is a true state?

Everything can return a false positive if it is interpreted wrong.

What performance data do you actually need, as the in guest counters can also be misleading in virtual machines.

I don't see any problem with having access to this information, and have granted read access to our DBA's to do exactly this. The main thing is that you understand what the metrics mean so that you can interpret them correctly.

A little bit of coaching and working together would quickly bring you up to speed so that you can be self sufficient. Perhaps they are trying to hide something?

I would ask them to at least consider it for a temporary period so that you can correlate this information with what you are seeing from a database perspective ... the alternative is that the VMware admins get bothered with questions every 5 minutes.

Cheers,

Jon
