Getting fork errors when executing my backup, maybe have to increase ulimit parameter. Please help!

While executing a backup script sometimes I get fork errors.

Maybe I need to increase some ulimit parameter but which value should I use and how do I know if that could really be the problem?

I was told to get the ulimit -p value.  It was 128.  But how many do I am using.  I tried determine that by using ps > ps.txt but clearly is not that simple.

How can I determine what is the process count used compare to the ulimit -p value.  If it is close then I need help changing it permanently or at least for the backup script job.
