General (but techy) question about ESXi passthrough

I occasionally need to read old tapes using wide HVD SCSI. I have a couple of different generation PCIe motherboards running ESXi 5.5 and 8.0.

I have tried two different PCIe-to-PCI bridges (one using the XOI2000A and the other the ASM1083 bridge chip) to use AIC78xxx SCSI boards to interface with the tapes, but the ESXI 8.0 box gets PSOD whereas the 5.5 box will allow simple SCSI commands, but gets a "there is more data" error when reading blocks from tape. If I boot into Knoppix on the bare metal, the read commands work fine.

So clearly ESXi "passthrough" is not really passing everything through.

Can anyone explain what's going on and maybe some possible workarounds?
