General Question ESXi 5.5 - md5sum performance

Hi Everyone,

I have a small lab environment which includes an ESXi 5.5 server, nothing crazy dual core CPU, 4GB of RAM, about 300GB of storage.

I have been working on a project that utilizes ESXi's md5sum command. During some of my experiments I end up hashing a 40GB file. However, it takes almost 2.5 hours for the hash calculation to complete. To make things stranger, I copy the same 40GB file from my ESXi server onto my Linux box and run md5sum again and the Linux box finishes hashing in about 2.5 minuets. I have not been able to find any papers or discussions about this beyond a forum post from a few years ago that said in regards to md5sum on ESXi "it's just slow". Anyone have any experience or suggestions why performance would be so slow? I understand hardware probably has a lot to do with it but still 2.5 hours on ESXi and 2.5 minuets on a less powerful Linux box does not sound right.

Thanks,

-Matt
