Hi, quick question as all of the whitepapers I read focused on either the paid versions or pCPU's. Is there any limit to vCPU per VM in free ESXI 5.0...if so what is that current limit? Also is the ability to specify vCPU's as multiple cores rather than individual processors in the free version?
Welcome to the VMware Communities forums. With vSphere 5 Essentials -> Enterprise you can create VM with up to 8 vCPUs. Enterprise Plus allows VMs with up to 32 vCPUs. See page 8 - http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf.
I would assume ESXi free will also allow for 8 vCPUs VMs.
Physical CPUs and cores can't be combines to expand the CPU capacity of a single vCPU. If you have an 8 vCPU VM running at 100% the most CPU it will have is 8 physical CPU cores.

You can set cores per vCPU in 4.1 and will assume that will remain in 5. http://www.vladan.fr/how-to-setup-number-of-cores-per-cpu-in-a-virtual-machine/
