File is larger than the maximum size

Hi all,

we run vSphere ESXi 4.1 and we have a Windows 2003 VM with 2 RDM files attached in virtual compatibility mode. We cannot make snapshot of this VM from vCenter.

Error: File is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore.

The same happens if using Veeam Backup 6.0

Each RDM file is 2,146,435,000 KB in size.

We have three datastores (2TB in size with around 200-300 GB free) and the blocksize of each datastores is already set to 8 MB.

We found KB article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101238... but we are not sure if moving the workingdir (free space?) or the vmx file would solve our issue. Also, it it a dangerous operation? Is the snapshot overhead preventing us to make a proper backup? How can we solve it also considering our free space?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Community,

yes, you are on the right track with the KB article you posted and your conclusion about the overhead. The maximum size of a virtual disk (or an RDM in virtual mode) in order to be able to create snapshots is ~2,032GB.

Unfortunately, there are not many options to resolve this issue. One of them is to create new - smaller - RDMs and copy the data over to them and then replace the larger LUNs.
